The Ku-ring-gai Cubs Rugby League Club was established to bring rugby league back to Sydney’s North Shore after an absence of more than a decade.
Founded in 2015, the Cubs were formed to give local children and families the opportunity to play and enjoy rugby league within the Ku-ring-gai community. The club played its first season in the North Sydney District Junior Rugby League (NSDJRL) competition in 2015, entering the league as its eighth junior club.
The formation of the Cubs was spearheaded by Bruce Walker, with strong support from Ku-ring-gai Council and the North Sydney Bears. At the time, there was a clear desire to re-establish junior rugby league in the area, but it required committed local leadership to make it happen. That vision became a reality through the efforts of passionate volunteers and supporters.

One of the club’s early coaches, Mark Maltby, captured the importance of the Cubs’ mission when he said that without junior pathways, the future of rugby league is at risk. From the beginning, the Cubs were built with a focus on grassroots development — creating opportunities for young players and strengthening the long-term future of the game.
The club’s original home ground was Barra Brui Oval, St Ives. As the club grew, the Cubs moved to Turramurra Memorial Park, which remains the club’s home today and provides a high-quality, picturesque venue for players, families and supporters.
Bruce Walker served as the club’s inaugural President, followed by Michael Asensio and Ben May. All three have been recognised as Life Members for their significant contributions to the club. In 2025, Michael Mamo was appointed President, guiding the Cubs into the next phase of growth and development.

Now entering its 12th season, the Ku-ring-gai Cubs continue to grow stronger each year. The club proudly fields boys’ tackle and girls’ tag teams across all age groups, representing the Ku-ring-gai community with pride in rugby league competitions.
